teachers
All is Vanity asked:

I know that teachers follow some sort of salary ladder where they are given increases in salary at given stages. But do a gym teacher and math teacher start in the same place? Anyone know what a theatre teacher would make?
Does a gym teacher and math teacher start at the same salary?

Thank you to my first responder. Depending on where you are located, a teacher can make a good salary. My friend is making 80,000 a year teaching high school. What are you making?

No, all teachers do not start on the same place on the pay ladder. If you are not certified or have a teaching certificate, you will get paid less. If you’re in a program like me in which you are considered highly qualified because you’ve got a bachelor’s degree, have passed several Praxis exams and are being trained by the board of education, you get paid a lot more.

In my state, teachers do have a pay scale. If you have your master’s you will earn 5 to 7 thousand more a year right from the start. Also, some school systems can pay a bit more than others..not much difference but some. I had been a teacher for 12 years without a master’s and made around 40,000.

Hi, it depends on the school district. Here in south Florida, every teacher starts at the same base pay. They get paid more for each year of teaching experience they have and get paid more for higher degrees they have earned. Also, they get paid more based on advanced certification (National certification for example). So here in south Florida, a gym teacher, AP science teacher, honors math teacher, and kindergarten teacher would make the same salary and would only get paid more for those circumstances I mentioned above.

All 1st year teachers with a Bachelors degree start off with the same salary. Whether you’re teaching fun classes like PE, Art, or Music or classes like Chemestry, Algebra, or Special Education, you make the same amount of money. I am a 3rd year teacher and all 3rd year teachers in my division make the same amount of money that I do.

In Michigan, all teachers start at the same payscale in reguards to the subject taught (i.e., an english teacher and a science teacher will get the same pay all else being equal).

The scale varies based on two things:

1) Years of service (the more years you’ve been working there, the more you get paid).

2) The education you have (the more education you have the higher your pay). There is usually a bachelors level payscale, a masters level payscale, and either (or sometimes both) a masters +30 (30 credits beyond a masters degree) or a doctorates level payscale.

So a teacher starting with a masters degree will get more than a teacher starting with a bachelors degree. An english teacher with a masters and 20 years of teaching will get the same as a math teacher with a masters and 20 years of teaching. Etc.

The exact amount varies by district (as does which factor, years teaching or education, increases the most).
