Angela M asked:

I’m having a debate with my roommate and I need some neutral help, as we are both teaching majors. She said that part of the reason she wants to teach kindergarten is because they don’t really have to take a lot of work home, so they have more free time. I’m telling her that EVERY teacher has to take some work home to grade or paperwork to do or resources to create, and she doesn’t believe me.
Specifically, what do kindergarten teachers have to take home to do? Thanks!

Yes all of my daughters did when they were in kindergarten,, It was usually cutting things out of magazines and papers, coloring shapes, basic addition

Yes but you should Only have NO MORE than 60 students.
30 in the AM and 30 in the PM. They split class like this because Kinders CAN NOT sit for 5 to 6 hours at a time

All Teachers have to take homework home to grade. Obviously it is NOT very hard to do since it is shapes, colors, alphabet and basic addition and subtraction

I’ve taught kindergarten for 9 years and no, there is no homework for the teacher to take home to grade. The teacher can grade the homwork as it is done in class. BUT. . . there is lots of work to take home. I have to take home the teachers edition of the math book to figure out how I am going to teach the next lesson. The same is for science, reading, etc. I need to make and photocopy reading books for my kids to read, writing sheets for the kids to practice printing, etc. I also need to make weekly lesson plans, monthly lesson plans, write a newsletter for the parents, and write goals for the principal to review how well I’m doing.

Soooo, I don’t correct kids work, but yes there is lots of work to do at home.
By the way, I let the kindergartners cut out the pictures, circles, etc. fopr the craft projects. That way, it looks like the kids did the art work.

I am a 5/6th grade teacher and was at school today (Sunday) working on some things. Both kindy teachers in my building were at school today for a lot longer than I was. There is actually a lot of material prep work for kindy, not to mention data tracking/collecting because there is limited amounts of info on children that age. It may sound strange, but older grades seems to be the best when it comes to prep work. The students can correct a lot of their own work, typically paper and pencils are the main supplies used, and they are able to help with more of the class responsibilities (bulletin boards, newsletters, cleaning, organizing, etc…). That being the case, there is usually a lot more curriculum to cover. Every grade has its ups and downs, but to want to teach kindy because there is little prep, seems silly.
