At a lot of schools, they do pay you during the summer. They take your salary and divide it into 12 monthly payments. It is easier for most teachers to have a little less each month but not have to think about saving for the summer months. In that case, any premiums for insurance or retirement will be taken out each month, including during the summer.
This depends on the state and the school district.
In my district we can choose to be paid over the summer or not. Benefits are either paid over the summer or out of the school year paychecks.
There is no ‘one’ answer to this question as state laws and individual district/teacher contracts vary.
First of all, teachers can get paid during the summer, it just depends how that person set up their payment plan prior to the school year. Benefits for teachers are pretty darn good, (but that depends on which state and district you work for). As a teacher who has worked in Ohio and now Texas, you may have been misinformed about teachers benefit programs.
What you need to do is talk to someone in Human Resources directly related to the benefits program to understand your questions and resolve those issues quickly, because school is about to be out any second here!
I worked in VA. A monthly allowance to summer paycheck is taken out by the school district and then in the summer you get a paycheck.
Some teachers work at totally different things during the summer: camp counselors; tour guides; park guides.
