tutoring
spliceviper asked:

I’m a recent Cal grad and have been tutoring K-12 for the last ten years. I’ve spent considerable time working with private companies and have been thinking of setting up my own private tutoring business. What are the steps necessary for securing a business name, and setting up the business in general?

I wouldnt want to have a tutoring center per se, but I’d conduct most of my services at their homes, or perhaps in my private home-office.

Assuming you are in the States, you need to register your business name with the county (Doing Business As) and check on what taxes and registrations are required in the state with the secretary of state’s office.
I think you will find that if you can’t get the people to come to you, the time you waste traveling will make it a poor income business. And don’t forget all those teachers out there with good contacts with the kids and a desire to earn money if they can.

Start with one kid and focus on the subject you are best at. Experience for yourself what it’s like interacting with the student and his/her parents. Get a feel for the tutoring business. When you have gained some experience, get more students. As an in-home tutor you can charge a higher rate but you are restricted to specific area - smaller market of potential students. You are also bogged down by teaching licensing/regulations. If you tutor online, the rate is lower but you can have a worldwide market of potential students and no teaching license requirements. Consider setting up your own tutoring website. Use this site as an example: Hope this helps you.

There is a sample business plan for a tutoring service at. It might help to see what someone else has done.

The best idea is to purchase a Sylvan Learning Center or other tutoring franchise.
