teachers

I have always wanted to become a teacher and now I have decided that I want to become an english teacher. Although, my father said that teachers don’t get paid that much money. Seriously, we all want money, but how much money do teachers usually get?

Honestly, you don’t go into a profession like teaching for the money. Teachers are paid so far below what they are worth due to penny pinching governments, and the community’s lack of respect for the importance of educators. It’s not slave pay, but considering the amount of work that goes into the degree and the work you have to do as a teacher, the pay is fustrating, especially when people who do other kinds of degrees get paid tens of thousands more.

Pay depends on where you’re at.
Here where I live, a city an hour east of L.A, a teacher can expect $32k a year, and capped at $38 or so for a B.A, you can get paid more if you have an M.A or a Ph.D

Starting salary for a public school is usually not less than 38 these days. Private school is very low, around 28-30 starting. With a Masters, these figures go up to 42 or higher and 35 respectively. It differs with districts as well. Some of the better located districts will pay teachers better than inner-city schools.

First of all, factor in location. 30k is very different in NH, where I live, versus Connecticut. Thus, starting could be anywhere from 30-40k, but it will work out to a very low amount of money no matter where you are.

My wife and I both teach in NH and barely make enough to survive, honestly. We’ve been teaching for three years. We have an apartment, one new car and one old car that we’re trying to keep together. We can’t afford to purchase a house or have a child. Unless you can function in poverty or have a lot of parent help for student loans, I’d look elsewhere for a career.

The pay of teachers is public knowledge because it uses tax payer monies.

You may call the superintendent’s office of whatever district you are in (or wish to teach in) and ask for a copy of the teacher salary schedule.

It completely varies state to state and district to district. I am in VT - my district start at around $27K and tops out at $54K. (That’s a Masters +30credits.)

A District on the other side of the state starts are $32K and tops at $81K - HUGE difference, same state.

Average teacher salary is around $40K, but it depends on the district. CT average is much higher (around $60K) because of statewide teaching contracts.

The only way to find out is to do the leg work. You can also look it up on the state’s educator’s association’s website - they often post this info for the entire state.

Don’t plan on becoming rich!

It depends on several things, including the district/region and your education level. You can do research by accessing the websites for each district.
