I’m a senior in high school this year and have had a few people ask me about tutoring them in classes for the summer. I’m graduating 3rd in my class of about 200 (so I’m rather qualified in a wide variety of subjects) and would be tutoring mostly math from basic algebra to basic calculus. What would be a good price per hour to charge? Also, should I tutor at my house or travel to their house; if i go to their house, should i charge for travel? Thanks!

well i am a university student, and i take 15$/hour. you cannot charge for travel, unless if you live more than half an hour away.

Go to a local tutoring center and ask for prices.
Take 25 -40% off the price they tell you. Let’s say the place charges 10 dollars an hour. You’ll charge around 6 to 7.50 an hour. This will be your base price.
If they want to go to your place, charge them your base price
If they want you to go over their house, charge them with an extra 10% for your bus fare.
Also, if they want you to stay overnight for night study charge your base price + 50 percent more.
Key things while tutoring:
Have a clear objective pricing scheme. You will charge friends and strangers the same fare. Except on the next case:
Be open to lower your fare in group situations. Charge your base fare + 50% if there is only two people. +75 in three and double fare in groups of four. A group of four would be a nice limit.
Have a special agenda. Here you can book the names, phone and addresses of your clients plus you can book your appointments with them.
You should charge at least $25.00/hr. and this should include your travel expenses. Do NOT go to their house unless a parent is present, preferably a female parent. Older sisters don’t count as parents. It would be preferable for them to come to your house. This will save you traveling time and keep you safe. I’ve gone to students’ houses in the past and was attacked by their dog, propositioned by the boy’s father, and found no one home when I got there. Please, be careful.
How much should a tutor charge? To be honest with you, it really depends on a couple of factors. For example, what credentials you have. Also, it depends on the area you will be tutoring in. If it’s in a bigger city then you can offer higher rates since there will be more people who need your services (the old supply and demand theory!). If you’d be tutoring in a more affluent neighborhood, you could also charge more.
You must realise that as a private tutor, you can charge a substantial rate but you are restricted to a specific area – smaller market of potential students. If you tutor online, the rate is lower but you can have more students. Think outside the box! Try online tutoring. Then you can have a worldwide market of potential students. Try sites like:
