tutoring
LK asked:

I am a college math major and I would be tutoring a girl in high school Calculus 1. What is a reasonable amount to charge. I actually enjoy doing it so I wouldn’t mind charging a low price, but what would be too low?

Hmmmm… I would say that about 100$ a week is a good price, if you’re really good then more is acceptable.

my mom charges 50 dollars for 1& a half hours for that sort of thing so somewhere around there would be good.

For this class, and given that you are still working on your degree yourself, $8-$12 per hour would be reasonable.

The average rate for a tutor without a Bachelors degree is $15 hr.

You don’t want to make it too high to where you can’t get help at all. But you don’t want to charge too low either.
I would go with around $120-$150 per lesson.
Make sure to have a limit of time for each lesson.
An hour would be good. You don’t want to get her totally overwhelmed.

Just do not charge by the minute. Charging by the minute would be a little much. Charge about $5 an hour. That would be perfect.

Anything under $10 and hour is probably not enough.

Charge too much and the ones that REALLY need it could not afford it.

If she is paying for it, remember how much you made an hour working highschool……not much.

JAMES on 25 December, 2008 at 5:06 pm #

$25.00 an hour

It depends on where you are, it varies greatly. In LA County the price can be half or less in one area than in another. Search and see if they have listings in your area.

Also, talk to people in the area with kids and see what they’re being charged, and call tutoring facilities and ask what their charge is. You should also make sure you’re comparing to a tutor with a similar education.

We live in a nice area in LA and tutoring here is $65 an hour through an excellent tutoring facility, for test prep and other subjects. The tutor is a CalTech grad. I know college students who tutor and they charge about $25 - $40 an hour, less if they’re tutoring the same student several times a week.
