asked: I am in highschool and am going to try tutoring a 4th grader. She moved here a few years ago (I think) so I am supposed to teach her reading and writing. Could I get some ideas on what to do for the first lesson and future lessons?

It seems to me that you should start by using her school books. Then you could think of other books in her reading category as you go along. Find out how well she can read and write. I assume this is an ESL student. She’ll be happy with any help she can get.

Go simple on the first day. Never, call them names for not understanding a problem. Let her show you what she knows so you can see what she needs to improve on. Most of all just have fun!
